The best mean old ALJ going!
Abrasive and blunt. However, he will do anything to make sure that a claimant finds representation before disability is determined, plus he also makes extensive use of consultative examinations. He can get pretty upset at representatives for not coming to hearing with a clear theory of the case, so be prepared answer at what stage of the 5 step process a claimant is disabled. One can stand up to him, but do so respectfully. He does everything he can to ensure every claimant he evaluates has a full range of testing done for alleged impairments and does not seem to mind putting cases on hold for CE exams. If the rep has had the case a long time, though, he may grill the rep on why one was not requested. Really, he is pretty fair. His big schtick is credibilty, and if anyone tries to fib to him, he will be on it like a ticjk on a hound. Be truthful.
Judge Wolfe is an honest and fair Judge that is a no nonsense type of person. he seems to be very effective in weeding out the bull. From what i see he is just in all his decisions.
Tends to be very serious, humorless and can be insulting and condescending to claimants and reps. Usually starts hearings asking you to provide your theory of the case, list of impairments, which vocational guidelines or listings apply, key exhibits etc. He will ask some background questions, then let rep question, but he continuously interrupts and sidetracks the line of questioning, often to rather irrelevant matters. If claimant testifies in any way inconsistent with prior statements he will say to the rep, “Your client’s credibility is dwindling dangerously…” or something to that effect.
Very rude and obnoxious but cool about favorable decisions and very fair in determining disability. Very intelligent and thorough. If you can stand a whole hearing with him and tell him the truth, you will probably win with good medical evidence.
