When I had my initial hearing in November 2020, I felt a little dismissed by Judge Schuman. Unfortunately, my representative at the time was not fully prepared to have my case heard, so that was part of the mix up. My hearing was rescheduled to May 2021, my representation was changed, and everyone there (including the medical expert and vocational expert), was very nice and easy going. My whole hearing took about an hour. I feel like Judge Schuman was very fair, was going by the rules and regulations set out by SSA and will make a proper ruling on my case.
Reading the other comments on here, I truly feel that you have to have the documentation to prove your case. You cannot just say you have a disability and do not have the proper justification. I have a whole laundry list of issues, but the documentation literally proved 1. Which is technically all I needed, but still. It’s all in the verbiage used by your medical providers and all the information that you get provided. It’s important to remember that Judge Schuman is not denying claims to deny them, he is doing his job and making sure that your disability (regardless of what it is) meets the criteria set forth by the SSA.

As a rep with 20 years experience…..This judge is just fine. I don’t know if I won my clients case but the hearing was normal. Some judges like help from the rep. Not this one. He’s got it. Which is fine!!!! Just stay quiet until you are supposed to talk. I didn’t find him much different from any of my local judges who are all great!

Horrible. Asks belittling questions, ignores treating physicians’ records and notes, doubts diagnoses and undermines your disabilities. Got a denial that could’ve passed for a Mad Libs.

Got denied for no good reason. The Disability system isn’t nearly adequate to adress all the disabled in this country. This is why we have so many crazy people sleeping on the streets.

Was rude, sarcastic, seemed like he had more important things to do. Not at all the characteristics I expected from a federal judge in such an important event for the claimant.

Judge Schuman tends to stick close to a script for the beginning of his questions and then delves deeper if he sees anything that isn’t in the record or that is confusing. He tends to be moderately prepared for the hearings beforehand, reviewing the evidence somewhat. However, he’s cagey and tries to confuse reps with whether he’ll grant or not. Hearings tend towards an hour long. Nice in person to most reps, but he’ll push claimants ******* certain issues, such as lack of exercise, post-onset work activity, age, and even how they pay the bills. He is very understanding to inability to afford treatment. Apparently he was kicked out of the Denver office and does most hearings in Casper, WY. All in all, a middling type of judge.
