ALJ Bassett is one of the old-school judges who actually believes in his role as a non-adversarial adjudicator. Very kind in demeanor and runs a relaxed hearing while still asking the appropriate questions and follow-ups. Bassett doesn’t do handouts if he thinks the evidence doesn’t support disability and yet he does not have the almost unreachable standard of proof that some other ALJs require, particularly recognizing that many individuals in front of him don’t have proper access to quality healthcare. Only quibble is that he can be bit eccentric and talk for awhile about matters of no relation to this case at hand- but I sometimes think that’s a tactic to get claimants at ease. Go in prepared but know that ALJ Bassett will give you a fair shake.
When the judge first entered the courtroom, he reminded me of ‘Kronos’ from SG-1. Quite an impressive figure!
During the hearing, his ability to cut to the chase was very good and in contradistinction from my attorney,
the difference in ‘legal minds’ was quite apparent. I was being sued for @$42,000 for @$12,00 in monthly
overpayments due to a change from a monthly payment to a weekly one. I will always remember him as
fair and analytical. Best wishes, Sir!
He has given my and my family the run around for my overpayment case. He has no idea what he is doing. We are so mad.
